Tragedy struck in Bequia on Thursday — Christmas Day — when an elderly woman died of suspected drowning around 11 a.m.
Report reaching I-Witness News are that 67-year-old mute, Greta Farrell, familiarly known as Magna Gregg of Hamilton, had gone to Hamilton beach to swim.
Sometime later, passers-by saw her struggling in the water and went to her assistance.
When she was removed from the water, she was barely breathing.
A doctor pronounced her dead on arrival at Port Elizabeth Clinic.
