KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – A man, identified as David “I-E” Poyer, is said to be hospitalised with serious injuries after a large boulder came lose from an abandoned quarry and crashed into a house at lower Roseau, Sion Hill during pre-dawn hours Wednesday.
According to reports from Vincentian journalist Ashford Peters, the boulder, which came loose from approximately 25 feet above, crashed onto smaller rocks at the foot of the quarry, struck another boulder then split in two before reaching the house.
The larger of the piece of rock crashed into the house, shifting it off its foundation, causing extensive damage, according to the reports.
The reports say that the lone occupant of the house was pulled from under a piece of plywood on which one of the two pieces of rocks rested.
He sustained serious injuries to a side and might have broken bones, Peters said, citing relatives of the injured man.
Acting Director of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), Michelle Forbes visited the scene at daybreak Wednesday to assess the situation.
Opposition Leader and Member of Parliament Arnhim Eustace also visited also visited the scene in his East Kingstown constituency Wednesday morning.
There was a second rock fall on Wednesday in the area where a number of houses are located close to the quarry, at least two of which are less that 20 metres away, according to Peters.
