KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – The Ministry of National Security will on Monday begin a four-day training session aimed at sensitizing officials about issue related to trafficking in persons (TIP).

The training session will be conducted in collaboration with the International Organisation on Migration (IOM) and in keeping with the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act 2011.

The Ministry of National Security says that the objective of the training is to sensitize officials on understanding the basic concepts of trafficking in persons and the Trafficking in Persons Act (2011).

Trainees will also learn about key stakeholders’ role and responsibilities in the response to TIP and how to use a referral process for victim identification and assistance.

Chissey Mueller of the IOM will be the main facilitator and the training session is expected to be attended by senior officials from the Police Force, the Immigration Department, the Social Welfare Department, Non-Governmental Organisations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Director of Public Prosecution’s Office, the Port Authority – Port Police, and the Attorney General’s Chambers.

On Thursday, members of the National Task Force, headed by the Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr. Ralph Gonsalves will attend a briefing session on the various aspects related to TIP.

The training programme will be preceded by an opening session on Monday, at 9 a.m. at the Foreign Affairs Conference Room.

It will bear remarks from Commissioner of Police Keith Miller; Chissey Mueller, director of IOM, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Douglas Slater.

The Trafficking in Persons Programme is part of the work programme developed with the IOM.

Other training sessions will be held in February and March.
