KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – The Ottley Hall community has already begun to see an improvement in the crime situation, weeks after a mobile police station was deployed to the West Kingstown Community.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who is also Minister of National Security, visited the area recently after the shooting dead of Alvisha Browne.

Browne, a 19-year-old mother of three, died on the spot in Ottley Hall after receiving a bullet to the head on Jan. 4.

“I just want to say something to the people of Ottley Hall. Now I came over there less than two weeks ago, you told me you were very appreciative of the mobile police station and you like the idea that we are going to have a permanent substation. It is has already had an effect on lifting the quality of people’s life because of its effect in reducing crime, which mainly comes from persons from outside of the community of Ottley Hall,” Gonsalves said during a press briefing on Tuesday.

“Secondly, you said to me that you wanted streetlights. Then and there, I telephone in your presence, Thornley Myers [chief executive officer of VINLEC]. Now the streetlights, 21 of them, were put in on Friday and completed today,” he further stated.

He said he has also spoke to Minister of Works Sen. Julian Francis and the Bridges, Roads and General Services Authority about a piece of road from the back of Ottley Hall to Buddy Gutter.

“The on-going questions for further training for people in Ottley Hall and for employment, we continue to work in the usual developmental manner,” Gonsalves said, adding that some of the issues he addressed in the media briefing were also relevant to creating opportunities for residents of the community that has been plagued by gang violence.

“I just want to say to the people of Ottley Hall and other parts of the city, other parts of the country, to talk to your representatives and let them make representatives on your behalf. Of course, most of those representations would have to come to me either in a direct way or first removed because of my role formally in the governance arrangements as Prime Minister and Minister of Finance,” Gonsalves further said.
