KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) on Tuesday published this photo on its Facebook page as it attempted to reassure Vincentians that there was no increased activity at the La Soufriere volcano, which last erupted in 1979, displaying 20,000 people.
NEMO said in a statement that on Tuesday morning its office received several calls from concerned persons and media houses enquiring if the La Soufriere volcano was erupting.
Some callers indicated they had seen smoke coming from the volcano while others indicated that they were smelling sulphur, NEMO said.
It, however, said that monitoring staff in St. Vincent and Trinidad had not reported any increase activity at the 4,049-foot (1,234 m) volcano.
“NEMO … wishes to remind the country that we continue to be affected by a trough system which is producing dense clouds and fogs, thunder showers and lightning storms. It is possible that lightning flashes combined with low clouds and fog can give an illusion of smoke in the area of the volcano,” the statement said.
