KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, Feb. 6, IWN – This country has received the development plan for the city to be built at Arnos Vale after the completion of the Argyle international airport –scheduled for yearend.
“This is the plan for the development of the area and this is how the development parcels are — large parcels to be further sub-divided,” Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said at a press conference on Monday.
“We have to put in the infrastructure; we are getting the costing of the infrastructure to go in — the internal roads and to put in sewerage systems, to put in the telecommunication infrastructure, everything that is concerned with a development and then we will proceed to pre-sell the various lots of land in a public-private partnership for the development of that site,” Gonsalves further said.
Gonsalves, who said he has received a transportation assessment to support the development, also said the new city will include a tunnel under Cane Garden point, connecting Arnos Vale to Kingstown.
“And I know when we had spoken of the possibility of a tunnel that there are persons who scoffed at it.
“… I remember people in the opposition, the Opposition Leader in particular, calling it tunnel vision. That was his immediate response. Everybody agrees that we have to have a better transportation system in and out of the city. And, on the windward side, it is particularly problematic.”
Gonsalves said that his government has obtained a US$13 million loan for rehabilitation of the highway from Hospital Road to Layou and that the project should commence this year.
“We have done road works on the windward side but there are real access problems in and out of the city. I mean, it is a nightmare getting in early in the morning and leaving…” Gonsalves said.
