The Food and Agriculture Organisation has been reminded of the problem with the coconut water bottling plant that it helped to set up in this country some years ago.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves told FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva this month that the situation remains an embarrassment.

“… where there are embarrassments, we must speak them,” he said during a joint press conference during a visit by da Silva to this country.

“The FAO partnered with us on a coconut water bottling plant. And they helped us to set it up and then basically left us high and dry with all the problems associated with it,” Gonsalves said.

“There are problems to be resolved and the Director General has said to me that he is determined to have them resolved. So, too, Deep Ford (sub-regional co-ordinator of the FAO),” Gonsalves told reporters and media audiences.

“We have to be honest in our relationships. It’s the only way we can proceed. We have to be truthful, recognise what are the challenges and move forward.

“… That’s the way you do it in the home, that’s the way you do it in relationships, that’s the way we do it in partnerships. I personally don’t know any other way for it to be done. And we address these matters with openness and transparency,” Gonsalves said.

“The FAO does a lot of good work for us and with us, but that one is a blot. And that blot has to be erased and it has to be corrected. And we are all resolved for that to take place,” he further stated.
