The Mental Health Centre in Glen will be relocated temporarily to Orange Hill while the existing facility is repaired.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves made the announcement on Saturday at the opening of the Smart Hospital in Georgetown.

“A lot of work is going to be done on the mental hospital. Something which I have to say to you and I want to get your cooperation and I want the people north of the [Rabacca Dry] River, particularly in the Orange Hill area, the extent of the repairs which we have to do at the mental hospital, the psychiatric hospital, can’t be done with the patients in it.

“So, we have to make some temporary facilities — safe, temporary, sound facilities and the place, which has been chosen for this is up at Orange Hill,” Gonsalves said.

“I don’t want people to start to panic,” Gonsalves said.

“Just remember this, that Glen and Fair Hall have been living with it for donkey years and nothing untoward has happened.

“The Community College is right nearby. I mean, it is just some absolutely ridiculous fears, just like when you want to have a prison in an area, people say ‘Me nah want no prison.’ But the safest place is where the prison is because you have a lot more security there, and if prisoners break out, they want go far they no want stay near,” he said.

  1. With the recent developments at the community college I believe the right fit for the Mental Hospital may very well be at Orange Hill. At Orange Hill, the patients can be involved in agriculture and other vocational work that they may very well have the skill set for. The Mental Hospital can then be used as an extension to the Community College since space is going to be a consideration for future development.

  2. Most appropriate send them to the Orange Hill cabbage farm, we will never know what the poor sods are experiencing there, or how they are being treated.

I hope they get them some new beds and burn all the piss stained stinking foam rubbers that the sleep on the floor on.

  3. Fitz is correct. If the aim is to ultimately create a university like institution at the Community College with all the attendant space, facilities and amenities that go along with such a set up, and if the aim is to attract foreign students to come to SVG to pursue their studies then I must be missing something. Thy will need all the space that they can get in Glen, where space is already so limited. Building a completely new institution for persons with psychiatric issues in a different location seems like a more sensible idea.
