Lawyer, Carlos James has confirmed that supporters of the Unity Labour Party (ULP) in North Leeward have asked him to be the party’s candidate in that constituency in the next general elections, constitutionally due in 2015.

“I have been asked, but will consider entering the electoral process if it is what the people in the constituency want. It is their decision to nominate and elect a candidate,” James told I-Witness News.

Prime Minister, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who is political leader of the ULP, in a comment to James after the launch of the National Economic and Social Development Plan 2013-2015 in Kingstown last Friday, suggested that the lawyer was getting involved in politics.

James remains tight-lipped about his plans but I-Witness News understands that he may have to contend with physician, Jerrol Thompson, another ULPite who represented the constituency between 2001 and 2010, when he lost to the New Democratic Party’s Roland Matthews.

I-Witness News understand that Thompson, a former minister of technology and science, who Gonsalves once described as “arguably the brightest man in the Cabinet”, wants to contest the seat again.

However, ULP insiders say that the majority of the persons in North Leeward, who will vote in the primary, support James’ candidacy and the party is likely ask Thompson to stand down and give way to a fresher, younger candidate.

Sources say that a third person has also expressed interest in contesting the seat for the ULP.

James, who is originally from Troumaca, worked as a journalist for seven years before pursuing training in law in Britain.

He has undergraduate and master’s degrees in law and has been practising in St. Vincent for three years.
