The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has seized just over BDS$37,000 that were allegedly found in a private motorcar along with

6,178 grammes (13 pounds) of marijuana.

Narcotics officers on Oct. 31 intercepted the motorcar at Murray’s Village in capital Kingstown and arrested two persons, Jamal Grant of Mc Kie’s Hill and Lenny James of Stubbs.

Following the bust, money was handed over to the FIU and an application made to the court for its retention.

Grant and James appeared before the Serious Offences Court last Monday, Nov. 4, charged jointly with possessing 6,178 grammes of marijuana with intent to supply to another and possessing 6,178 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Grant pleaded not guilty and James pleaded guilty to the charges. The matter was then adjourned to Tuesday to give the prosecutor, Crown Counsel Carl Williams time to seek instruction from Director of Public Prosecution Colin Williams on how to proceed in light of Grant’s not guilty plea.

When the matter was called Tuesday, the prosecutor indicated that they were not withdrawing the charge against Grant.

Chief Magistrate Sonia Young scheduled Grant’s trial for Dec. 6.

Lawyer Grant Connel is representing Grant and James.

James is expected to be sentenced at the end of Grant’s trial.
