Police in Guyana on Tuesday shot dead a man who “had apparently gone berserk”, killing two cops and two civilians in a shooting rampage in the nation’s capital.

Demarara Waves, a news website in Guyana, said the assailant was Deryck Kanhai, a miner, who sources told the publication was a drug addict and was having problems with his girlfriend.

Kanhai is said to have shot and killed policemen Lance Corporal Michael Forde and Constable Sherwin Pantlitz as well as Crown Taxi Service dispatcher, Vanessa Williams, and taxi driver, Bonny Paul.

After the shooting, the man was holed up in a building in Georgetown, the nation’s capital.

“The police subsequently stormed the building and came under fire from Deryck Kanhai. The ranks returned fire and he was fatally shot,” Police Force spokesperson, Ivelaw Whittaker said in a statement, Demarara Waves has reported.
