Prime Minister, and political leader of the ruling Unity Labour Party, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, says that while a recent poll says the party is favoured to win the next general elections — a fourth consecutive term — surveys are not election results.
He made the point on Monday at a press conference during which he spoke of the Government’s undertakings over the coming months.
“There are many items on the agenda. And, as you notice, we are not only talking. We are doing things,” he said.
“The people probably realise that,” he further said, adding, “… after all, they may have come close to a dangerous result in 2010 in December, [but] it seems as though they are rightly pulling back from getting close to that dangerous result, when it was 8-7,” he said of the outcome of the last general elections.
Caribbean pollster, Peter Wickham, recently released the finding of a poll, which showed that if elections were called in October, the ULP could have wrestled two to four seats from the opposition New Democratic Party.
“And, of course, 61 per cent of the people say — according to the polls — that they prefer Ralph to be Prime Minister than [Opposition Leader Arnhim] Eustace,” Gonsalves said.
“That is a big number…” he further commented.
“But, of course, polls don’t win elections; you have to win elections on the day, which means that we have a lot of work still to do as a government, and we have a lot of work as a party,” he said.
“But I am not talking about party now. I am talking about government. We will have enough time to talk about party when we have our convention on the 15th of December,” he said.
