A Vincentian man in the United Kingdom died last week after unknowingly consuming a drink, purportedly bottled in Trinidad, which contained lethal amounts of cocaine.
The death of Royal Navy veteran, Joromie Lewis, 33, originally of Greiggs, has resulted in the UK’s Food Standards Agency warning the public about the soft drink — “Cole Cold Pear-D”
UK media reports say that Lewis fell ill immediately after consuming the pear drink on Dec. 5 and died in hospital within hours.
Lewis thought he was consuming a genuine pear drink, but a laboratory test found that the liquid contained a lethal amount of cocaine, media reports say.
His widow, Jayrusha Lewis, said in a statement that Joromie was “a devoted family-oriented man with a selfless attitude to help others, and always knew the right words and advice to give.
‘His exemplary conduct and actions touched the lives and hearts of many,” she further said.
The UK’s Food Standards Agency has issued a p warning to the public about the soft drink.
The drink is labelled as “Cole Cold Pear-D” and the label says it is manufactured by S.M. Jaleel & Co. Ltd., Otaheite, Trinidad.
However, the company has said they do not export Pear-D to the UK, reports say.
