The Opposition New Democratic Party, issued the following statement midnight Thursday, calling on all Vincentians to assist as the nation attempts to rebuild after loss of live and widespread damage due to torrential rains Tuesday night. (Read also: Opposition Leader visits areas affected by flood)
The New Democratic Party wishes to commiserate with our brothers and sisters who are mourning the loss of loved ones who perished during the recent freak storm that inflicted untold pain and suffering mere hours before we were set to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Rarely in our young nation’s history have we seen such a tragedy which at once resulted in the loss of life, injury, damage to property, ruination of farms, death of livestock and destruction of infrastructure, water and electricity supply. Truly, our resolve as a people has been tested.
The NDP is considerably pained and we are determined to use every available resource at home and abroad to assist Vincentians who need help most. We have already been in touch with friends, well wishers and affiliates in the Caribbean, America, Canada and the United Kingdom to assist with relief efforts. Our main focus will be on assisting with clothing and shoes. Of course, some have indicated their interest in contributing funds and food. Any assistance will be appreciated in our nation’s time of need.
We urge all Vincentians to continue to be good neighbours. Let us assist with the clearing of debris and other hindrances from our surroundings. Let us share our homes and food and water with our neighbours. Let us keep all those who are suffering the loss of family members in our prayers.
