Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says water will be restored to 85 per cent of consumers in St. Vincent by Tuesday, Dec. 31, one week after torrential rains triggered floods and landslides that caused eight deaths. Five persons are still missing.
The extreme weather caused extensive damaged to the water, and general, infrastructure across the country.
Water rationing has been implemented and 42 trucks are transporting water to various countries across the island but has been having challenges meeting demand, Gonsalves said on Saturday.
I-Witness News was the only local media present when Gonsalves briefed the media after on Saturday at the end of a planning meeting.
The planning meeting included members of the Cabinet; diplomats; senior government officials; Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and chair of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Baldwin Spencer; local and foreign contractors, utility companies, financial institutions, representatives of the governments of Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, and representatives of Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).
The severe rains and high winds due to a low level trough system has also impacted St. Lucia, and Dominica.
