The National Youth Council (NYC) expresses deep concern at the plight of thousands of Vincentians as a result of the floods and landslides caused by the December rainstorm. Our heart has been filled with pain and sorrow for our people who were affected by this devastating calamity. NYC wishes to extend our heart-felt condolences to our fellow Vincentians especially the bereaved families of those who were affected by this disaster.

The Council particularly sends our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and wish them strength in this time of human tragedy. We can only imagine your feelings of sorrow and concern for your loved ones, friends and relatives who may have been affected in one way or another by this tragedy. We hope and pray for our country’s speedy recovery from the effects of this disaster.

Therefore, The National Youth Council calls on all its affiliates and youth to voluntarily assist those in need in their communities and other affected areas. The Council urges it members to lead by example through practicing safe environmental habits, including the practice of harvesting of rain water. Let us be the change we wish to see.

The National Youth Council also calls on all NGOs, civil society and the private sector to support the Government’s rehabilitation effort. Together we can overcome this. “Though government has an important role to play in meeting the many challenges that remain before us, we are coming to understand that no organization, including government, will fully succeed without the active participation of each of us. Volunteers are vital to enabling this country to live up to the true promise of its heritage” — Bill Clinton.

We must applaud the volunteers that are already on the ground such as the Red Cross, CYEN and many others assisting our fellow Vincentians in their time of need.
