The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) on Wednesday handed over a cheque for EC$125,000 to Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves to go toward the Christmas disaster relief effort.

Deputy chair of the board of directors of NBC, Theresa Daniel, presented the cheque for monies raised during a radiothon involving all local radio stations.

Gonsalves thanked NBC for their initiative in hosting the radiothon, adding that it was clearly a success.

He noted that the Government has received EC$40,000 from the Football Federation, which was obtained through CONCACAF, and EC$50,000 from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Distillers.

Gonsalves reiterated that it will cost the government approximately EC$2.4 million to support families in shelters for six months and also those in the communities who still need assistance.

He further noted there are 662 houses that have been damaged or destroyed.

Gonsalves highlighted that over EC$10.5 million worth of building material is available for reconstructive efforts.

He noted that management of these resources is crucial for an effective rebuilding process, and said this is an area that will be monitored closely, since remedial work from hurricane Thomas and the April floods of 2011 will also be addressed.
