Between EC$75,000 and EC$85,000 is needed to repair damage to VINLEC’s generation and supply infrastructure during last Saturday’s extreme weather.

Most of that money is related to cleaning and strengthening work at the hydro power stations and some monies related to the repairs required to the line infrastructure, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves told a press conference on Tuesday.

There are also some longer-term repair issues that have to be dealt with and VINLEC has that in hand, Gonsalves said.

He said the immediate impact on the state-owned power generation and distribution company was reduced output from the hydro station at Cumberland, due to the situation at the intake.

Some preliminary clearing was done using manpower, but heavy equipment was needed to do some other work, Gonsalves said.

The South Rivers Power Station was shut down for roughly two days while the intake was cleared with manpower, and the station was back online early Tuesday morning.

Also, a group of customers was without power for about two days, due to access problems to replace a pole, Gonsalves said.
