Edgar Cruickshank, the former Unity Labour Party South Leeward Constituency Council member who was injured when a vehicle came into contact with the crowd at a New Democratic Party political rally in Clare Valley Saturday night has died, a well-placed source has told I-Witness News.

Some six persons were injured during the incident.

See earlier story below:

Edgar Cruickshank, a former staunch supporter of the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP), was among several persons injured when a vehicle came into contact with the crowd at a political meeting of the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) in Clare Valley Saturday night.

The incident, which brought the meeting to a premature end, occurred as Leader of the Opposition and President of the NDP Arnhim Eustace was addressing the crowd.

Cruickshank, a resident of Top Questelles and former ULP South Leeward Constituency Council member, was among the persons rushed to hospital, but I-Witness News has so far been unable to verify their identities or the extent of their injuries.

At least six persons were injured, and a person at the meeting who helped the injured told I-Witness News that the former ULP activist “is/was in bad shape”.

Private and police vehicles and ambulances were used to take the injured to hospital.

Cruickshank had expressed disappointment in Sen. Jomo Thomas emerging as the lead contender for the nod as the ULP’s South Leeward candidate in the next general elections, which must be held by March 28, 2016, but are widely expected by December 2015.

He did not attend the constituency conference in July at which Grenville Williams, who Cruickshank supported for the post, nominated Thomas to be the candidate — seemingly with little magnanimity, notwithstanding his oral endorsement.

After the formalisation of Thomas’ candidacy, Cruickshank threw his support being the NDP’s Nigel “Nature” Stevenson, who is seeking a second term as MP for South Leeward, where Clare Valley is located.

Stephenson, gave Cruickshank a special welcome at the meeting on Saturday, saying, “In the audience tonight, there is another first, because one of the persons who was instrumental in ensuring that Labour keep (sic) its base in South Leeward and also throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines, tonight he is now in the audience, not dressed in red [but supporting the New Democratic Party.”

The vehicle involved in the incident was a car, registration number P7516, and was driven by a male.

  4. The family, other relatives, and friends of Mr. Edgar Cruikshank, Vincentian nationalist and likely political martyr, are hereby assured of my deepest condolences. I found him to be a very outspoken man, and possessed of solid political courage. May he rest in peace.

Is it a mere coincidence that he was the one actually killed, apparently receiving the very brunt of the injuries? Was he specifically targeted, and to what end? And, who will bell this seeming cat, politically speaking ?

I appeal to the people of SVG to keep calm. Let us keep cool heads and see this thing through in a wise and well-thought-out manner. Do not be provoked into any precipitate or inadvisable situations.

The truth shall make us all free, ultimately. Quo vadis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines . . .

The people of svg should not have to keep calm, for this is what we’ve been doing for far too long and what we got is political oppression of the people and their families when the disagree with this regime. We are hurt, angry and have been let down by this corrupt regime. Now it’s time to march in a peacefully rally, show love and unity, and let them know that we will not let them get away with this time around.Time to get rid of the three men ruling system.May God give his family strength at this difficult time, for no one should have to die for what they believe…have we lost our humanity?

  6. The lord is thy light and thy salvation of whom shall we be afraid. It is said that,” what is in the dark must come to light”. I know that god does not sleep and it is a similar situation that happened in march of 2006, when Glenn Jackson was killed and within months they stopped looking for anyone to persecute for that heinous crime. To many things have gone in the past and the government has turned a blind eye. This was no accident and from all accounts and reports it was a wicked terrorist act to do what was done on such a unforgettable event. People have the right to vote, the right to their opinion and when this type of thing happens it causes uproar. Thanks for the opposition leader and other delegates who have ask for people to remain peaceful.
