Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves is the “greatest asset” St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP) possess, Sen. Camillo Gonsalves said on Saturday.

Sen. Gonsalves, who is the Prime Minister’s son and the ULP’s candidate in East St. George in the next general election, expressed the opinion in Calliaqua at a rally in celebration of the party’s 14th anniversary in office. (Scroll for video report on celebrations)

“And let me tell you something: the greatest asset that we have in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the greatest asset that the Unity Labour Party has, is the leadership of Dr. The Honourable Ralph Gonsalves, our Prime Minister,” said Sen. Gonsalves, who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“Comrades, we know now what we only suspected in 2001. We know now that we have the best prime minister in the entire Caribbean — Ralph Gonsalves. That is a fact,” he said.

“When CARICOM has a problem, when the OECS has a problem, when the region has a problem, they call Comrade Ralph,” he said, and mentioned the Prime Minister’s interventions on LIAT, banking, CLICO and BAICO.

“And the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines know that every individual one of you can also call Comrade Ralph.”

Vincentians are widely expected to go to the polls to elect a new government this year, although general election is not constitutionally due until March 2016.

Sen. Gonsalves said that in many ways, electors will be faced with the same choice as in 2001, when the ULP was first voted into office: the leadership of Gonsalves or Leader of the Opposition Arnhim Eustace.

“Imagine that a flood has washed away your house because of a natural disaster and imagine there are two doors in front of you, one says ‘Ralph’ and one says ‘Arnhim’. Which door you going to knock on? Imagine your child or you need a scholarship to study overseas and one door says ‘Arnhim’ and one door says ‘Ralph’, which door will you knock on,” said Sen. Gonsalves, a political newcomer.

“Imagine there is an economic crisis around the world and you are afraid that you are going to lose your job or you need a job. You’re going to knock on the ‘Arnhim’ door or the ‘Ralph Gonsalves’ door?

“Imagine you just want to talk to somebody, to reason with them, to sit down at the rum shop and lime. Which door you going to knock on? ‘Arnhim Eustace’ or ‘Ralph Gonsalves’?”

“Comrades, when you face the ballot box and the ballot paper, whichever constituency you are in, ask yourself that question: am I, as an individual, better off with Arnhim Eustace as my leader or with Ralph Gonsalves as my leader. If you ask yourself that question and you answer it honestly, this election is a landslide. Trust me! Trust me!”

Sen. Gonsalves said that on the question of the international airport at Argyle, Gonsalves and the ULP said “yes”, while Eustace said “Find it (financing) where?”

The EC$700 million airport has missed several completion deadlines since 2011 and is now slated to become operational this October.

The senator said that on universal education, Gonsalves and the ULP said “now”, Eustace said “Well leh we think about that again in 2020”.

On economically disadvantaged loans Gonsalves and ULP said “yes”, Eustace said that would burst the bank, Sen. Gonsalves said.

He went on to contrast the responses of Gonsalves and Eustace after the Christmas Eve floods of December 2013.

“This is the difference in leadership,” he said, adding that while Gonsalves embraced the Venezuela-led ALBA, Eustace said it will un-sign ALBA’s energy initiative, PetroCaribe.

“These are the differences you have to think about and this is why you have to pat yourself on the back for voting the ULP for all those terms in office, because you did a good thing. This country would have been worst off if you had made the other decision,” Sen. Gonsalves said.

“On the uplipftment of women, Arnhim Eustace says get out of their way, leave them alone, and let them fend for themselves. And this government says no, there has been discrimination historically against women, we have to do affirmative action to give them a helping hand.”

Eustace, at his “New Democratic Party’s Conversation” with Women last week said that the successive ULP administrations have “actively set back the women’s agenda” in SVG as he outlined 10 ways in which an NDP administration would “get out of women’s way”.

“I mean by this, that a responsible government recognises that it cannot give women empowerment. For none empowers a woman but herself. It is the role of government, and men too, not to stand in the way of women’s empowerment,” Eustace said.

“… I want to say that we have an important choice coming before us next election. We are either going to consolidate all the good work of the Unity Labour Party or we are going to undo it and throw it away,” Sen. Gonsalves said.

“If the ULP has touched your life in a positive way, and I know it has, you cannot throw away the Unity Labour Party in the next election. We have to put us back with a stronger majority than ever before. I want to see us bringing back what they accidentally took away. I want back North Leeward. I want back South Leeward, I want East Kingstown and Central Kingstown and West Kingstown. And I hear a talk about the Southern Grenadines; I feel I want that one too,” he said.

The ULP is seeking a fourth term in office amidst declining fortunes each successive election, including the lost of four seats in Parliament in the 2010 elections, when it was returned to power by a one-seat majority.

“Comrades, we cannot allow ourselves to grumble. We cannot allow ourselves to grumble and stumble. And if you grumble politically, you will stumble. In this electoral season, we have to focus on what is good and what is right in this country,” Sen. Gonsalves said.

He spoke of the Bible story of Moses and the Israelite and how their grumblings resulted in their being in the desert for an additional 40 more years before they entered the Promised Land.

“… you can’t grumble when you have good leadership. You can’t grumble when you know we are going in the right direction. You can’t grumble when you know the Unity Labour Party is the natural party of governance in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and you the people have put us here to serve you and that we humbly promise that we will always continue to do,” Sen. Gonsalves said.

  1. You may all remember what I once wrote about the family dynasty [die nasty] these people will stop at nothing. As the rest of the family are added, Camillo, Storm, Isis, Francis, they will continue to a take strangle hold on us and we will become more and more marginalized as they take total control of this island, their plantation.

We shook off the last chains of slavery only to be reshackled by the Gonsalves leadership, certainly if not physically, certainly mentally.

All this begging shows how worried they are, because if the people relly loved them, really wanted them, they would not need to beg.

We must remember all the evil that came from this regime, Bigga Biggs and hundreds of people like him who have been destroyed by them during the creation of this dynasty.

As for all the readings from the book of the Lord, we must remember that Gonsalves told us that if he works Obeah, he only works Obeah for the Lord. As far as I am concerned that is a satanic statement.

  2. Clement Percival says:

There is a very strange terminology that is sometimes used in accounting to reflect a balance sheet problem. That is, “negative asset””. It points to an asset that appears to be good, nut that in reality is toxic. It cannot realize a gain for the organization, notwithstanding how glittering it seems to be or how glowingly it is described. The reality will always speak. So Camillo had better check that one out. I notice that he and others are speaking about grumbling, and stumbling, about questioning and discarding. Do they know something??? Ha! Ha! Ha!

  3. This is not for Ralph, but for Camillo to become the leader of the ULP party. I wonder how these lemmings can’t see that. Someone should collect some stats on how many jobs the ULP has created over the 10 years. They are all frauds and false prophets. They are trying to pull down the competition, instead of running on accomplishments that benefitted all Vincentians, not just their supporters. Does anybody know how many non-ULP supporters got into the housing scheme? Ralph is not a leader of all Vincentians. He’s a leader for his ULP supporters and for the Windward side of the island, where all his projects failed.

  4. The greatest asset in SVG is that natural beauty standing in the front row…she’s royal…you can see it in her eyes, in her smile…

    …oh right, about Camillo’s comments…Camillo, haul yo…!!!…lol…

My latest election prediction, using the latest polling results conducted by Ms Muggy School Of Higher Learning: NDP- 10(7+CENTRAL LEEWARD+SOUTH WINDWARD+NORTH WINDWARD)

ULP-5…Gonslaves will resign after two years as Opposition Leader. Health problems will be the excuse.

*Linton Vs Camillo?…I think the onus is on Linton…Camillo has upside and can sustain a first time loss on his debut on the political stage. BUT, but, Linton has no room for error…in my opinion, this is his last chance to show his mettle as a politician…if he loses…its over for him as a NDP candidate.

  5. If my Daddy gave me high paying positions and grooms me to lead his party I probably would say he’s the best at anything too. Vincentians are waiting to hear about the date, that’ all we want. Everything else is just wasting time.
