A Nigerian student at one of the local medical schools died at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital last Thursday.
The student, Johnson Nwafor, is a enrolled in pre-med at the American University of St. Vincent.
Nwafor, who is between 22 and 23 years old, had meningitis — an acute inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, and cerebral abscess, a source familiar with the development told I-Witness News.
Nwafor is said to a have been in an out of hospital since March, and was last admitted Tuesday.
“It is really sad. He came here to study, not to die,” the source told I-Witness News.
The school is said to be organising a memorial service for the student, whose body will be sent back to Nigeria for burial.
Same old crap, the poor man was initially misdiagnosed, even the medical school with all their visiting specialist let him down.
A hospital incapable of diagnosing these kind of medical problem. The same hospital has no suitable drugs for treatment.
If this happened in the US, the doctors would be sued out of sight, and the hospital closed down and the administrators also sued out of sight.
I remember well dear Colin Gunsam, went to the hospital with a slight facial stroke. They failed to diagnose the actual problem and he eventually went to the US, where it was found he had meningitis type infection of the brain, that could have been treated and successfully cured if it had been correctly diagnosed. Since then he lays in bed, sits in a chair, paralyzed almost totally, cannot talk. Again the Gunsams would have had proper redress had it happened in the US, or in almost any other country.
But not here in SVG.
There was no one had more vitality than the fun loving Colin Gunsam. He is well loved and often thought about by many whose life he touched.
We can only, and must blame the ULP government for underfunding the medical services in SVG. Its all very well the ruling family able to jump on a private jet at any time and go for treatment anywhere they wish in the world. All the poor people just have to die at the hands of our hospital and it doctors.
The doctors should speak out, they are in breach of their Hippocratic Oath by failing to do so, in my opinion they are also committing a mortal sin.
