Telecommunication provider Digicel will open a call centre in St. Vincent and the Grenadines this year, Minister of Technology Sen. Camillo Gonsalves has announced.

“In the outset, it will employ about 50 employees. Forty to forty-five of those employees will be local. And it will have a telesales focus in its initial operations. They have shared with me the floor plan of the facility and they are going to have a shift system,” Gonsalves told a press conference on Friday.

He said he was not sure, however, how many shifts will be in operation at the centre, but said it will be more than the regular 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours of operation.

“They’ve told me about the location, they’ve given me a sense of the type of training that they are going to give local employees, the salary range they are thinking about and the like, but I don’t want to go too far into it, except to say that the call centre which we discussed is on its way,” Gonsalves said, adding that Digicel will have a press briefing about the call centre soon.

“It’s significantly advanced and this is another example of the type of foreign direct investment that we are trying to attract to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, particularly foreign direct investment in the technology space,” Gonsalves said.

Unfortunately for us, cold-call telemarketing is a dying business with more and more countries enacting legislation prohibiting unsolicited calls. There are national do-not-call lists which potential customers can sign on to which carry heavy penalties for businesses that break the law.

Most Third World countries haven’t jumped on the bandwagon but will when the public demands an end to annoying phone solicitations.

Believe it or not, I just spent a few minutes in my backyard cutting and depositing a bag of sheep manure in my wife’s kitchen garden!

She would have preferred cow poop but I couldn’t find any at the garden centre.

Do you know where I can buy some?

    C-Ben,
What the hell you know about call centers or telemarketing, Let me tell you something.
I receive more calls from telemarketing, or agents today, than at anytime before, and that a fact.
Weather it’s the Banks, Insurance company’s, Local contractors, real estate agents, or just somebody who looking to con you out of something.

You are just like that LAZY Eustace, full of hot air.

    1. Mr. Luther Bonadie, I must say you sound like an idiot and I will not even go into details about your brainless comments

I don’t know where you are living or whether your country or state has do-not-call legislation which is the issue I am talking about.

I get very few calls and have for years. I also report calls from sites that should be prohibited from calling me and that does the trick.

Before my government passed the do-not-call legislation, I used to get 4-5 calls a day which was very annoying since most came at the dinner hour because that’s when the callers knew most people are home.

Now I only get robo-calls from political parties which is permitted but still annoying.

I get a lot of annoying texts from Digicel when I am in SVG… Hopefully these will stop one of these days.

I hope this addresses your concerns.
