Another set of matches will be contested this weekend when the National Masters Cricket Tournament continues at various venues.

In the opening round of matches last week, Sion Hill Masters overcame a scare to beat newcomers RYB Challengers by 58 runs at Arnos Vale 2, in one of several matches which took place on Sunday’s opening day.

SCORES: Sion Hill 156/5 (20 overs), RYB Masters 98 (17.4 overs).

After posting what looked a good total of 156/5, “the men from the Hill” endured a nervous period as RYB Challengers mounted a sturdy riposte, behind sensible knocks by former SVG and Windwards wicketkeeper/batsman Uzzah Pope (26) and kemrom Fraser (22).

The pair had the Sion Hill players an uncomfortable bunch as they rotated the strike while getting the odd boundary here and there. Pope always one known for a “cool head” looked in control as he met almost everything with a broad bat while knocking into the gaps.

They had taken the score 74/1 in the 11th over when Andrew Bramble bowled Fraser as the batsman attempted to push the score along. Pope was then caught off the bowling of Rodriguez to send the innings into free fall.

With the rate now at 10 runs an over, the incoming batsmen all committed “Hari Khari” as they tried desperately to get as move on. This resulted in the Sion Hill bowlers cashing in on some cheap wickets.

Cleton Burnette finished with 3/2 and Joseph Medford 3/12 as RYB Masters folded for 98 to lose by 58 runs.

Earlier, Sion Hill Masters who struggled at the beginning of their innings were helped to their eventual total by consistent batting in the middle.

Bill Edwards 28 (2 sixes and 2 fours), Augustine Victory 27 (two sixes and one four) and Sylvester Vanloo 23 all combined to put runs on the board.

Leopold Simmons took 3/28 bowling for RYB Masters.

In another match, this time at the main Arnos Vale Playing Field, St. Vincent Cooperative Bank Ptani Masters defeated Marriaqua Masters by 30 runs in a match reduced to 15 overs, owing to a late start.

St. Vincent Cooperative Bank Ptani Masters batting first reached 124 for 3 off 15 overs with Isaac Haywood leading the batting with an unbeaten 49. He struck 5 fours and 1 six and got good support from Jerome Samuel (24).

Wendell Parris took 2/9 bowling for Marriaqua Masters.

The teams at the break between innings observed a minute’s silence for the late Ray Laborde a school teacher, who passed away earlier this year and who played in the competition for many years.

Marriaqua Masters never looked in the hunt and were dismissed for 94 in 14 overs, with Raymond Mingo 25 being the topscore.

Adolphous Campbell 2 for 9 and Cassius Welcome 2 for 3 did the damage for St. Vincent Cooperative Bank Ptani Masters.

In other results: North East Masters defeated Cato’s Heavy Equipment Glamorgan Masters by 7 wickets. Cato’s Heavy Equipment Glamorgan Masters: 58 all out in 14.3 overs, Harvey Pope: 4 for 8, Winsbert Springer: 2 for 14. North East Masters 60 for 3 off 9.3 overs.
