The one-day official visit of President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, to St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) on Tuesday was postponed suddenly and without explanation.

The red carpet had been rolled out at E.T. Joshua as SVG prepared to welcome the South American leader, who was scheduled to arrive at 10:30 a.m.

But, in an email to the media at 9:47 a.m., Elson Crick, communications consultant in the office of the Prime Minister, said:

“I regret to inform you that the visit the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro Moros, has been postponed to a date to be announced.”

No explanations were given for the postponement of the visit, which had been announced less than 24 hours earlier.

By 10:30 a.m., the only sign that Maduro was scheduled to visit SVG was the ALBA-branded military aircraft on the apron at the airport, which is said to have transported the advance team as well as media practitioners from Venezuela.

Maduro was expected to visit the construction site of the international airport at Argyle and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves during his visit.

On Sept. 24, Maduro visited St Kitts and Nevis and storm-ravaged Dominica carrying messages of solidarity and offers of support.

  1. Did the SVG government reveal to the citizenry the reason for the visit? Check us out just in case we need to call for some heat? Hmmmm!

  2. I think he concluded he was being used. He probably didn’t want to get too involved with the SVG political agenda.
