Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves on Thursday denied leaving the country for medical attention on Wednesday, saying that he went to the Southern Grenadines for a meeting with investors.
“Yesterday morning, early, I went down to Canouan. I went by a plane. There are important developers are here in the country and I wanted to talk to them about several matters concerning the development in Canouan,” Gonsalves told a press conference on Thursday.
“And it was a good meeting,” Gonsalves said.
He said his trip resulted in rumours that he was ill.
“I was completely unaware until I came back and was chairing the meeting of Cabinet with several official discussing, I got several messages from people all about, including from overseas, to find out – wishing me well. They hope I recover.
“Apparently, I was taken out on a stretcher overseas,” Gonsalves said.
“And this falsehood, was propagated. Why? I was seen at the airport and apparent when I left or when I came back, the ambulance was around. That’s what my security officers told me. I mean people are so obsessed with Ralph and just speak all these falsehood,” said Gonsalves, who turns 70 in August.
“I mean all I did, I went and did work and I came back in time to do my work here.”
Gonsalves recently injured his leg during a visit to Dominica — the third leg injury in less than a year.
He, however, told iWitness News in late December that he is “fine”.
My understanding is that the Prime Minister went to Canouan to help resolve yet another dispute between islanders (mainly poor black people) and outside developers (all of them millionaire white people like the Prime Minister) who are being accused of illegally blocking beach access to local residents, a chronic problem in Canouan going back years now.
International tourism will always relegate our people to the back of the bus.
