Claira Hermet, a former BBC Radio 1xtra host and television presenter in London, United Kingdom, gave up her life in the United Kingdom to travel the world. After having a double mastectomy in 2014 and loosing both her mother when she was 9 and sister several years ago to breast cancer, she decided to travel the globe and film every minute.
Beginning her journey on New Year’s Eve, arriving in St. Vincent, Claira states: “St. Vincent and the Grenadines is my favourite place on earth so far, so I thought it would be the perfect place to begin my journey. Since leaving in 2008 I’ve been longing to return and as soon as my feet touched down in St. Vincent I felt a sense of peace. It’s so beautiful here”.
Hermet visited SVG twice previously and spent 3 months in 2008 working and discovering the islands. “I can’t wait to explore the islands, meet the locals and film everything St. Vincent and the Grenadines has to offer! Please help me on my adventure by suggesting things to do in St. Vincent, voting on my weekly poll and watching my videos on YouTube – I want to experience the real SVG that the locals suggest!”
Hermet will be visiting South, Central, North America, Canada and Alaska, as well as other parts of the Caribbean.
“I might even return to SVG to end my journey as I love it so much!”
Hermet’s experiences in SVG will be great exposure for the islands and has already had interest from persons wishing to visit after seeing her videos so far. I may be wrong, but doesn’t seem like she spent much time on the mainland before heading to the Grenadines. I wonder why?
No, I was wrong, she is still on the mainland but has relatively few Twitter followers.
What we really don’t want or need are young backpacking tourists with little cash to spend — which is what she appears to be since she says she is carrying only a backpack — but middle-aged visitors willing and able to spend lots of money while they holiday here.
I haven’t seen the total tourist numbers for 2015 yet but the partial figures are not encouraging partly because our tourist sites have been allowed to deteriorate so much.
Why spend so much money on developing a site only to let it slowly decay because of a lack of maintenance and upgrade?
Our Botanical Gardens, for example — the oldest such public garden in the Hemisphere — used to be one the finest in the Caribbean. Not any more.
