The Upper New Montrose woman who reportedly had locked her children in their house where a fire later broke out and claimed one of their lives has been charged with manslaughter.

Tamara Lavia, a 28-year-old mother of five, was brought before Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne Matthias at the Serious Offences Court in Kingstown on Friday, where the indictable charge was read to her.

She was charged with causing the death of her eight-month old son, Simrique Lavia on Jan. 26.

The woman is also facing child abandonment charges in relation to her 18-month-old daughter who was also in the house at the time of the fire.

The manslaughter charge replaces one count of child abandonment.

Lavia had initially been granted bail in the sum of EC$45,000 and has been ordered to surrender her travel documents.

The court has ordered that stop notices be placed at ports of entry and exit, preventing the woman from leaving the country.

She returns to court on Feb. 18.

The woman’s children have been placed in the custody and care of the Social Welfare Department.

  1. This is rough the lady lost a child, irresponsible perhaps, she was punished already insult to injury her children taken from her now she is facing jail time? NO HUMANITY WHAT A WORLD WE ARE LIVING IN.

Did social service assisted her prior to the fire, they should be in court also for negligence, perhaps if they intervened earlier the life of a child could have been saved.

Don’t come now and act mightier than though

  2. This mother needs to go to jail it is not the first time I live in the area and she is neglectful. One of the children was recently abducted and still she didn’t learn from that situation maybe some jail time will help her understand
