One year after being charged with assaulting his girlfriend Bennisha Baptiste, Lara Carter and the woman have been jointly charged with gun-related offences.

The duo, both of Ottley Hall, appeared at the Serious Offences Court in Kingstown on Monday, charged with conspiracy to discharge a firearm in a public place at Rose Place on Feb. 12.

Carter was further charged with possession of a firearm, make and model unknown, at Rose Place on Feb. 12.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The charismatic Carter, told Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias that the conspiracy charge made him feel as if he was on a murder charge.

Senior Prosecutor Adolphus Delplesche asked that the matter be stood down before proceeding to the bail hearing.

When the matter was recalled, Delplesche said that the Crown has no objection to bail for Baptiste, provided that she can provide sufficient surety.

However, the prosecutor noted that there was an outstanding bench warrant for Baptiste over her failure to turn up to the Family Court for a hearing in a matter one week earlier.

She was remanded in custody until Tuesday, for appearance before the Family Court.

The woman will have to remain in police custody for an additional week, until next week Tuesday, as the Family Court did not sit on Tuesday, as scheduled.

Delplesche said that after Baptiste appears at the Family Court, the Crown would have no further objection to her bail.

The prosecution, however, objected to bail for Carter, noting that he was on bail in connection with a robbery on Dec. 3, 2017, in which a firearm and a knife were allegedly used.

The magistrate said she would not consider bail for Carter and scheduled the next hearing in the matters for March 8.

In January 2016, Lemisha Parris, 21, was jailed for attempting to smuggle 10 cigarettes and one “bomb” of marijuana to Carter at the Central Police Station, when he was in lock-up in connection with a number of offences against Baptiste.

The charges he was facing then included theft, assault, damage to property, and pointing a gun at her.
