St. Vincent gets new Supervisor of Elections

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has a new Supervisor of Elections.

Dora James, a retired principal, was sworn in Wednesday at a ceremony at Government House, replacing Sylvia Findlay-Scrubb, who held the position since 2009, also after retiring as a principal.

James was also sworn as a Justice of Peace.

She took the oaths for these two positions in the presence of Governor General, Sir Frederick Ballantyne, who presided over the swearing-in ceremony.

Also present were Head of the Public Service Commission, Cecil “Blazer” Williams, acting Chief Personnel Officer, Arlene Sam, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Godfred Pompey, and family members and well-wishers.

In his remarks, Sir Frederick described Mrs. James as a lady of integrity who has served for many years in the public service adding that only individuals who have distinguished themselves are appointed Supervisor of Elections.

He urged James to carry out her duties to ensure that all elections are free and fair and reminded her that her duties extend beyond polling day and that she is responsible for entire processes leading up to that day.

The Head of State also told James to prepare for the hard work which her office entails, but which most people do not recognise.

He cautioned her to be fair and honest in her duties, to be ready to defend her role and to ensure she does the right thing.

Meanwhile, Pompey expressed on behalf of the Ministry, gratitude to Findlay-Scrubb for her “human service” to this country and wished her well in retirement. He also thanked incoming James for accepting the important responsibility of Supervisor of Elections.

Pompey further thanked her husband, Cuthbert James and other family members for “allowing her to make this bold move”.

In response, James, thanked Findlay-Scrubb for her hard work.

“I am certain that I am going to work hard to ensure fairness and integrity in the office of Supervisor of Elections,” she said.

“To St. Vincent and the Grenadines, I say fear not, God is in control. He promises to deliver and He will deliver, and with your support we will bring integrity… in the office of Supervisor of Elections”.

James said that her office is a public office and that if anyone has any queries that she will make herself available to them.

She extended gratitude to her family and friends for their continued support.

James’ appointment comes even as Findlay-Scrubb is a respondent in the two election petitions that are currently before the court, challenging the results of the December 2015 polls.
