The Hairoun South Leeward Carnival 2018 will be launched this Friday with a fish fest in Clare Valley.
The event takes place at the end of the road along the street running parallel to the Clare Valley Government School, near to the beach, Jules Morgan, coordinator of the festival told iWitness News.
“We will be having a tent and stage and sound system; we are having some mas (carnival costume) presentations, calypso, soca also,” he said, adding that the artistes include Royal, Nicki, Dynamite, and Bomani.
The next event is a culture fest on May 18 in Vermont.
That event will include soca, calypso, and steel pan.
On May 19, there will be a pre- j’ouvert jam at Club Dzia in Questelles,
From 4 a.m. on May 20, revellers will party on the street from the “block” in Questelles to Pembroke.
“We are taking the main road into Pembroke. Wherever 8 o’clock meets us, that’s it,” Morgan said.
The j’ouvert will include an “ole mas” competition.
“That’s something new for the area. So we are looking forward for people to come out, all the persons that normally support South Leeward to come out again this year and just enjoy themselves.”
At 4 p.m. on May 20, there will be a street party (jump-up), which will begin at the Chauncey Bus Stop, proceed along the main road to Upper Questelles, on to Campden Park, along the road to the industrial site and into Lowman’s Bay, culminating at Pirates’ Cove.
“We want persons to come out, as usual, support the South Leeward Carnival. We are asking persons to come out, have a good time and remember that the no-glass-bottle policy is in place. And we want it to be violence-free because if any violence occurs, the usually shut down is going to happen…” Morgan said.
When I read the caption, I thought that this festival had something to do with fishing. I see now that it is just another jump-up, drink rum, feel good, have sex and forget about all the serious issues fest. After which everybody goes back to their misery.
