A man — said to be mentally ill — died in Canouan after being shot by police on Sunday.
Police say they responded to a report that Dale Dabreo was attacking residents of the southern Grenadine island.
Dabreo is said to have attacked the police with a knife and a cutlass.
Police opened fire, injuring Dabreo.
He was taken to the Canouan Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead.
Dabreo is the second person with a history of mental illness to die after being shot by police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines over the past eight months.
Last August, in Penniston, police shot Stilson Harold in the leg after he reportedly attacked them when they responded to a report from his son, Stilson Harold Jr., that he had stabbed him in the neck with a piece of steel.
The older Harold was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where he bled to death.
Police say the injured man’s unruly behaviour prevented health care providers from treating him for his injuries.
We seem to have a bunch of trigger-happy police in SVG, which suggests a review of their training to deal with people with mental illness.

Mentally ill! Shot and killed! IF it is true that the man had a knife and cutlass, that’s extremely serious and the police have to defend themselves. But was it necessary to take the man’s life, or could he have been shot in the leg(s)? Ah wonder!
I believe in a case like this Police should summon a Mental Health Doctor and or Nurse to the scene to tranquilize the patient, not go alone and take them down by the bullet.
This is very unfortunate.
I remember my grandmother telling me of days when “madmen” would be out – as in attacking the village and or “acting up”, and a doctor would come on the scene with police and throw a needle of tranquilizer meds – that is – a shot via the syringe needle and situation was under control.
So I don’t understand how a mental patient could be in a hospital or on the street and the Health or Mental Personel cant get them subdued.
