John Horne, a former Member of Parliament under the New Democratic Party (NDP) administration, died Monday morning at the age of 76.
NDP Vice-President St. Clair Leacock confirmed this to iWitness News, saying that the former West Kingstown representative died at home in Cane Garden around 1 a.m.
iWitness News understands that Horne was being treated for prostate cancer and other complications.
Horne represented West Kingstown from 1984 to 2001, when he lost to Rene Baptiste of the Unity Labour party, which swept to office, ending the NDP’s 17-year management of the nation’s affairs.
During his time as a Member of Parliament, Horne served as a cabinet minister, with responsibilities for education, culture, and trade under then prime minister, Sir James Mitchell.

Let us never forget the cold blooded murder of his ex-girlfriend at high daytime in front of the Central Kingstown police headquarters by lawyer Mark Williams whose insanity plea for this premeditated act earned him a wickedly short five years in prison.
“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The reality is that bad or negative things happen to good people also. My only aid during this sad news of the passing of a dynamic person, this gentleman, this industrialist-of-humility, is in knowing that there is another Angel on Heaven’s greeting committee. I am saddened at the passing of John, I knew him very well as we are both from Kingstown, and members of St. Georges Cathedral, I had lunch at his home when a number of us from overseas attended the reunion of SVBGS in 2005. and again in 2015 on another of my visits, he actually announced me as a visitor to the Cathedral then. To Jeanne and family, condolences. Memories begin when as children we performed in the Anglican Mothers’ Union choir that sang at the then “must attend annual concert” at the Peace Memorial Hall! Trained and practised by his Aunt and Weston Lewis, music icons of St. Vincent! John went on to leave his mark in so many parts of SVG history. Much appreciated his lead in that memorable tour of the Kingstown Chorale to Toronto, and so enjoyed visiting the Chorale’s practice sessions or performances in SVG when we visited. Roots of his decency and stewardship run deep! He will be missed. May he Rest In Peace!
