An 82-year-old Layou man, said to be a veteran of the United States Army, and his son were brought before the Serious Offences Court on Thursday in connection with a gun and ammunition haul in the Central Leeward town the previous day.

The older man, Hermus Patrick was charged with possession of a .38 revolver pistol, serial number 7C29662, without a licence issued under the Firearms Act.  

He was further arraigned on five counts of possession of unlicensed ammunition, namely five rounds of .38 ammunition; 30 rounds of .38 ammunition; 30 rounds of .25 ammunition; and five rounds of .38 ammunition.

He was jointly charged with his son, Robert Patrick, with possession of 45 rounds of .38 ammunition.

The men allegedly committed the crime in Layou on Wednesday, June 5.

They pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and the father was granted EC$10,000 bail with one surety, while his son was granted EC$30,000 bail with one surety.

Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne recused herself from the matter, saying that she knows one of the accused men well.

The men’s lawyer, Grant Connell, asked for an expedited hearing, and the matter was adjourned and transferred to the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court for next Tuesday, June 11.

    I always have a soft spot for Veterans. They served their country in conflict they did not create. They are then mothballed and forgotten. I hope that the Judge shows leniency in this Veteran’s case.
