Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said that his government wants to invest more money in local cricket.
He told a press conference in Kingstown last week Tuesday that he met recently with President of West Indies Cricket Ricky Skerritt and Vice-president Kishore Shallow along with Mike Findlay, an advisor to the board.
“We had a long discussion and the discussion I had was both as chairman of the prime ministerial sub-committee for cricket in CARICOM and as prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines; also as a cricket lover.
“And I want us to put some more money into cricket. The government itself, coordinated from the primary school, grassroots level going up, and I also want, as I discussed with them, a continuing programme for persons who have done well at certain levels, like, for instance, we have several under-19 people who do very well.
“Sometimes, they even take them to the high performance centre when they have that and then they leave then on their own.
“There has to be a continuous programme so that nobody lapses. In professional sport, you watch the way just simply the top cricketers how fit they are: Australia, England, New Zealand, India.
“India, which used to have a reputation not for fitness; different story now.
“Some of our bowlers bowl a first spell of four overs, when they come back for another spell, after one over, they start to blow.
“It is a complicated business but we have to get it…”
Gonsalves said he knows that footballers are saying that they work in that area too and he is hoping that with the president of the football federation, Marvin Fraser, that the government and the football federation can do some things together.
The prime minister reiterated that his government has ring-fenced $4 million to do a track with a football field on the inside at Diamond.
“And I will make a report to CARICOM about our discussion. But they are doing a lot of reforms and they have a number of committees so I am going to see if I get a slot for them at the intercessional head in February to report,” Gonsalves said.

Ring fenced 4 million from where? Gadhafi already gave us in loan and gift of more than 15 million [wasn’t this US dollars] which has disappeared without a trace. That money was for a stadium, track, football pitch and much more, no stadium and now the promise of a pre-election track and soccer field.
Please tell the people where the 4 million is coming from, and where the money went for the original project, and perhaps whilst you are doing that, also tell us where the money went for the Cross Country Road.
If the CDB had been funding these projects we would not need to be asking these questions.
I sometimes wonder if the need to stay in power forever is in anyway connected to these kind of events.
Dear Mr Chance cannot you ask these questions of the PM, where did the money go for these projects? I know he hates it when you ask these kind of questions, but please, only you are in the position to do so.
NDP leadership please ask him the questions in Parliament, and in public, perhaps join with Mr Chance in doing this. A kind of joint effort.

That money could and should be spent on Football. Most of the youths are involved in that sport. It is also another way of keeping the youths out of trouble by helping them to be active and keep out of the ganja/marijuana league.

Don’t just put money into cricket but youth development on a whole. What about putting more money into the Cadet Force and giving the other youth organizations like Girl Guide and Boy Scouts a subvention? More focus needs to be on the young people.
Based on this year’s carnival photos, St. Vincent and the Grenadines have a very young population. How are we going to develop and utilize these young people so they do not slip into a life of crime. What is our strategy for the young people?

Good Jolly. All of us make at least a few mistakes. I often re-read and find spelling errors, which is often my keypad, (such as when I write “too”, and it instead writes “to”) or these automatic spelling programs that put the wrong word although I type the correct word. My point is not that all should write or spell perfectly. My point is that what someone writes should be something that nearly all English-speaking people can understand, By the way, I did not mean your writing or most others, only some people that unfortunately did not get the education that Ralph promised them.
Jolly you are far from being the grammarian police on this site for obvious reasons that i have seen in your own writings . Sometimes when I write an articles the cell phone has its own vocabulary and grammar. This results an automatic default in a prose that was never intended. So don’t chastise a person for a word that is not in its correct contect. It may not be a sign of a failure of the education revolution or incidents of malaproprism.
This is so funny. I was about to lose my patience with Jolly’s comments about Jamal. However, upon closer examination of Jamal’s views, I really have to agree with Jolly. If someone is going to be critical of others, that individual has implied having a higher standard than the rest. Unfortunately JAMAL DID NOT demonstrate having this higher standard. Sorry Jolly.
