One man has been charged in connection with what was initially reported to police as the gang rape of a woman in Kingstown.

On Friday, Alex Thomas appeared, in camera, at the Serious Offences Court in Kingstown, where Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne read the rape charge to him.

Thomas was not allowed to plead to the indictable charge.

He is charged that on Oct. 5, in Kingstown, he had unlawful sexual intercourse with a 58-year-old woman who did not consent to it and at the time was reckless as to whether she consented.

Thomas was granted EC$8,000 bail with one surety and was ordered to have no contact with the virtual complainant.

He was also ordered to report to the Biabou Police Station on Mondays and Thursdays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The matter was adjourned and transferred to the Family Court for Monday, Oct. 14, when the date of a preliminary inquiry is to be set.

Police had initially taken five men into custody in connection with the rape and were on the hunt for a sixth, on the day of the alleged crime.

The rape reportedly occurred at the Reclamation Site in Kingstown during the pre-dawn hours of Oct. 5.

  1. When men become less than a man. They behave like animals, they do not understand what no means. They do not take care of their kids, they procreate without regard to their ability to take care of their family. They are disrespectful, they carry themselves less than the normal in most society. They do not care about education much less to work for an honest living. They break the law or have no regards for the law. Their conversation are full of expletives. Buyer beware run ladies run, run for you life and happiness.

  2. I asked myself the question can one man commit gang rape, then I thought of something Peter Binose once wrote “Can one cattle stampede? Can one person be a crowd? Can one person be a revolution? Can one tree be a forest?”

Peter Binose was a genius when it came to finding things out.

I suppose we must ask why is there no mention of forensic evidence by the way of DNA evidence, its not difficult today to prove which of the men had sex with her. But the police find it easier to accept the denial of all others if one person in a group pleads guilty. Its less work and less required beatings to extract guilty pleas. Our lazy policemen will always take the easy route out. Also gang rape is much more damaging than a one person rape charge when tourists look at statistics. There is also much more chance of one man getting off by claiming it was consensual sex, it is very difficult for six men to claim that.

It appears to me that the Magistrate has already come to a prejudgment and conclusion in this case “at the time was reckless as to whether she consented”.

Looking at the eyes of the accused they look very much like those of a pothead.
