Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves says Vincentian men like to box women and children, claiming that violence is an indication of their love.

He, however, said that during the COVID-19, the only boxes that should be given out are the “Love Boxes” of food that his government is making available to 3,000 persons affected by the pandemic.

Speaking on WE FM on Sunday, Gonsalves said that when Minister of Agriculture Minister Saboto Caesar initially brought the proposal to Cabinet, it was billed as “love basket”.

He said he asked Caesar if the items were being placed in a box, and the minister said yes.

Gonsalves continued:

“And you know, I want to say this to the men who’re listening to me. Over the years, I know men like to box woman and box their children and then they turn around, when they go to court, they say they love their children, they love their woman, that’s why they box them.

Now, I am saying to you, if you want to give a love box to your child or your woman, get a Love Box from Sabby. That is the only love box which is permissible in disya time,” the prime minister said.

Cecil Ryan, one of the hosts of the programme, told the prime minister that while Philbert John, another of the host was laughing, he (Ryan) agreed with the prime minister.

“That’s the real love box,” Ryan said.

Gonsalves added: “That is the only love box which is permissible.”

John chimed in: “I’m laughing because I am already seeing the social media kickback.”

“You see the social media kickback?” Gonsalves said. “Well, what kick back they could have?” the prime minister added, as John told him to “expect the spin.”

“Some men love to box women,” John further stated.

Gonsalves asked John – a social studies teacher and a secondary school vice-principal, if he did not know that that happens in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Don’t we talk about domestic violence?” the prime minister said.

“Yes, sir,” John said and Gonsalves added, “Why yo’ don’t want me to talk the facts?”

“And I think we are among the worst. That is me saying that,” John added.

The prime minister said he did not know if SVG was among the worst for domestic violence.

“We are written about a great deal and so too, other countries but I was only making the point as I always do in communicating to the ordinary man and woman in this country – the Love Box, that’s where it is.”

  1. To treat this subject as a matter of jest or a joke is absolutely irresponsible and disgraceful.

I am actually beginning to believe he does not know wrong from right. It may be that he should count to a hundred before he says anything.

It’s a sad, sad day, when the prime minister does not know right from wrong, or wrong from right.

Comrade you need a very long rest, and best you consult someone and discuss your mental health.

  2. Monica Rosa says:

Them bunch of vincy women y’all have there love men so they take the box and say he live mr. Darn foolish sinoritas
I would have chopped their hands off when I have thr opportunity. Fool fool women you all have over there.

  3. Urlan Alexander says:

Yeah lot of love and boxes are common in the ULP just ask the past and present press secretaries.

  4. Faking it! With election on the horizon COVID19 presents the perfect cover for what we Vincentians have come to expect from the powers that be. This time it commences with “A love box”.

Would the usual cash handouts now “go for a burton”? And what of those pigs, the lumber, the traditional galvanise, the sacks of cement, are they now to be replaced by this LOVE BOX or will the war chest be further opened much later?

Watch the space! It’s impossible for one to change their character, even if they will try very hard!

  5. Spousal abuse and overall women and child abuse in SVG is not something to make jokes about especially by a PM. After this, I want you to lose so bad I might just come home and help vote you out. You can’t run the country without money(on fumes) or by mismanaging the little that you do have. Then, jump up and start taking cheap shots [election gimmicks] and think that you’re funny. Well, you funny it’s only not the haha type of funny.

  6. This government give too much hard time,i encouraged all young ambitious vicentians, including people overseas come home and vote, argument wont solve the problems,we just have to vote and get a better government,we as a people must not commit to any political party thats why they can do anything they feel like to us and the country,we vote one out and if the next one Continue playing the fool next election get rid of them too,its time to put your country before any party.
