The long awaited in-country testing for COVID-19 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines will begin tomorrow, Wednesday.

“PCR testing for COVID-19 is expected to officially commence on Wednesday June 24, 2020,” Minister of Health, Senator Luke Browne told Parliament on Monday.

“We are already doing trial tests and we have on hand supplies that will enable us to do over 8,000 PCR tests for COVID-19 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines right now. This is important in light of the upcoming resumption of commercial flights,” the minister further told lawmakers.

He further said that the stock of the Cuban drug Interferon purchased by SVG for some CAD$30,000 would arrive on a special flight at AIA.

Interferon is said to have been used successfully for the treatment of viral illnesses.

“We continue to put measures in place to safeguard the health of our public,” Browne said.

As at 6 p.m. Tuesday, SVG had recorded 29 cases of COVID-19, 27 of who have since recovered.

The Coronavirus Taskforce further said that 763 persons have been tested for the viral illness and there were no results pending.

The Taskforce said 202 persons were in quarantine and the country had recorded no death related to COVID-19.
