St. Vincent and the Grenadines, on Wednesday, recorded its third death as a result of COVID-19
The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) said that the latest victim is a 76-year-old woman who was admitted to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) on Sunday.
NEMO said that the woman had multiple pre-exiting conditions and succumbed to multiorgan failure.
The death follows that on Jan. 18, of an 80-year-old man, who died three days after he was admitted to MCMH, with complications of a chronic non-communicable disease.
Jestina Pompey, 49, was the first person in SVG to die of COVID-19.
The woman, who had with multiple pre-existing conditions, died on Jan. 15, one day after she presented to the hospital services with difficulty breathing.
Meanwhile, SVG, on Wednesday, confirmed eight new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 1,067.
The cases were confirmed from samples collected between Jan. 17 and Feb. 2.
“All of the new cases were detected during contact tracing and testing of persons with flu symptoms,” NEMO said.
There are now 918 local cases of COVID-19, many of whom are linked as contacts of known positives, a press release further stated.
Further, 63 additional persons have recovered, bringing the number of total recoveries to 338.
NEMO said that 726 cases remain active.
“All positive cases will remain isolated until cleared. All close contacts of positive cases currently in quarantine, should contact the flu clinic in their district to arrange testing for clearance.
“All residents of and visitors to St. Vincent and the Grenadines are reminded of the importance of consistently wearing facial coverings, practicing physical distancing and frequent hand washing, or sanitization, to reduce the likelihood of being infected with the virus which causes COVID-19,” NEMO said.
