KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent — When Avia Charles takes her final walk Saturday night as Miss SVG 2011, she will bring to a close a year that was “good” but which she wishes was “great”.

“My year was good. I would not lie; I wish it [had] been great,” she said at a Carnival Development Corporation press briefing Tuesday.

“Miss SVG is an ambassador for St. Vincent and the Grenadines and I must say that one of the things that … I would really like to see the Ministry of Culture utilise the Miss SVG not only to promote St. Vincent and the Grenadines on a local level but [also] regionally and internationally as well. So I think that’s something that I would love to see done,” she said.

“I was involved in a number of activities based at the community level. I was afforded the opportunity of being the spokes persons of CARE SVG,” she said of the HIV/AIDS sensitization group.

Charles said that some Vincentian businesses discriminate against and stigmatise person living with HIV/AIDS and her organisation helps them to find employment.
