KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, March 8, IWN – The Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has declared today — Friday — a national day of mourning, being the day on which Hugo Chavez, former president of Venezuela will be buried in Venezuela.

The Government said on Thursday that all flags in the country should be flown at half-mast today as a mark of respect.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is leading a three-member delegation to attend Chavez’s funeral.

Gonsalves, along with his wife, Eloise, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sen. Douglas Slater, left St. Vincent Thursday to attend the funeral.

Chavez, 58, who had been battling cancer for two years, died on Tuesday of a heart attack, a government official in Venezuela has said.

And, Chavez’s embalmed body will be permanently displayed in a glass casket at a military museum after the state funeral, Venezuela’s acting president Nicolas Maduro has said.
