The Japanese are not known to wear their hearts on their sleeves.

However, Trinidad and Tobago’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Rodney Charles, who is a negotiator at the climate change summit here, says he saw changes in the Japanese ambassador after the “strong statement” issued by the Alliance of Small Island States (OASIS) on Friday.

The statement by OASIS was in response to Tokyo’s announcement, also on Friday, that it would reduce carbon emission by the year 2020 to 3.8 per cent below 2005 levels.

The original target was to reduce emissions by 25 per cent from 1990 levels.

Charles’ comments were made on Monday.
