The number of people killed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines as a result of the passage of Hurricane Beryl now stands at six.

At least five of the deaths occurred in Union Island in the Southern Grenadines.

“I have been advised that there are six deaths resulting from Beryl. Incidentally, I had to express condolences personally to Mrs. Bowens who is the widow of one of the persons who died and also her daughter,” Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said on NBC Radio on Wednesday.

“I saw them in Clifton yesterday. They are up here. Somebody has given them accommodation. And I had before on this programme expressed condolences to all those who died,” he said.

On July 3, Gonsalves said that Philbert Bowens and Stepahanus Pope died as a result of the impact of  Hurricane Beryl, which made landfall in the Southern Grenadines as a category 4 cyclone.

On Thursday, iWitness News was told in Union Island that five deaths had been linked to the hurricane.
Then, on Sunday, the body of a man was found under rubble in Union Island and that death was also attributed to the passage of the storm, a well-placed source has told iWitness News.

The government has not released the names of the four other storm casualties.
