ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) — Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell is urging Grenadians to keep former prime minister  Keith Mitchell “in their prayers” after he felt he was blacking out during a public meeting of his New National Party (NNP) on Monday night.

Video circulating on social media showed Mitchell, 78, who served as the head of government from 1995 to 2008 and from 2013 to 2022, telling the meeting “sisters and brothers, I am blacking out”  and sighing heavily before tumbling towards the side of the podium as supporters rushed to his aid.

The statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said that it is aware “of the sudden collapse of Dr. The Rt. Hon Keith Mitchell, Member of Parliament for St. George Northwest at an event at the Happy Hill Secondary School.

“Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell wishes Dr. Keith Mitchell a speedy recovery and extends his best wishes to him and his family. The Prime Minister asks that the nation keeps Dr. Keith Mitchell in their prayers,” it added.

Opposition Leader Emmalin Pierre said that the NNP wishes to assure all Grenadians that Mitchell “is well.

Pierre, who took over the leadership of the party from Mitchell last year, said “he subsequently walked out of the event feeling well.

“He is in good spirits. We appreciate your concern and well wishes,” she added.
