A 43-year-old Park Hill man has been fined and bonded for handling stolen goods.

Everoy John pleaded guilty before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to a charge that on Jan. 21 at Park Hill, he dishonestly received a quantity of ginger, valued at EC$200, for his own benefit.

Presenting the facts, the prosecutor, acting Sergeant of Police Corlene Samuel, told the court that about 12:10 a.m. on Jan. 21, the virtual complainant (VC), Kenrick Barker, also of Park Hill, received a telephone call about his farmlands at Park Hill.

Barker went to the land and discovered that his ginger had been harvested.

The VC met John along the Park Hill public road with a sack over his shoulder.

When John appeared to see the VC approach, he dropped the sack and ran.

Barker searched the sack and found ginger inside.

He took the sack with the ginger to the Colonarie Police Station and reported the matter.

When questioned by the court, John said he had no responsibilities, but that he cultivates for himself lands that people allow him to farm.

He asked the court to allow him to pay a fine.

Magistrate Kaywana Jacobs said John’s last conviction was spent and dates back to 2016, when he spent nine months in prison.

The magistrate concluded that John had tried to “move away from that type of behaviour”.

She fined him EC$250 to be paid by May 12 or one month in prison in default.

Additionally, John was bonded for nine months in the sum of EC$900. IF he breaches the bond, he must pay the sum forthwith or spend three months in prison.

Police Constable 973 was the investigator.
