The police officer who was found dead at the Special Services Unit (SSU) base in Old Montrose on July 22 died of a single gunshot to the head, which investigators have concluded was self-inflicted.
On Wednesday, the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force provided the update on the investigation into the death of Police Constable 1116 Kenrick Scott, one week after he was found dead.
Sources familiar with the case had told iWitness News in the hours after Scott was found dead that he was believed to have killed himself amidst an allegation that he had committed a serious sex crime the previous night.
The alleged victim had reportedly threatened to report the crime against her and is said to have made a report to the police after Scott was found dead.
iWitness News was reliably informed that investigators have since collected multiple statements and other digital forensic evidence substantiating the allegation against the dead officer.
However, one source said that the police force cannot comment openly on the allegation if they are to protect the alleged victim, which is paramount when dealing with sexual offences.
The source told iWitness News that in light of the findings of investigators, people close to the investigation are waiting to see whether the police force would grant Scott a military funeral.
In their statement on Wednesday, the police force said that a post-mortem examination conducted two days earlier established that Scott died as a result of a single gunshot wound to the head.
“After reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, the post-mortem findings and the witness statements obtained, investigators determined that the fatal gunshot wound was self-inflicted,” the release said.
“The RSVGPF remains mindful of the personal and sensitive nature of this matter and respectfully asks that Constable Scott’s family be afforded privacy during this difficult period.
“The Commissioner of Police and the wider membership of the RSVGPF again extend sincere condolences to Officer Scott’s family, friends and colleagues.”
