The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Meteorological Services has issued a flash-flood watch for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, effective until 2 p.m. Saturday.
A strong tropical wave approaching the islands is expected to bring overcast skies, heavy showers, gusty winds, and thunderstorms. Rainfall accumulations of 50 to 75 millimetres—or 2 to 3 inches—are anticipated, with higher amounts possible in mountainous areas, a press release said.
Residents in flood and landslide-prone areas, as well as those living near rivers and streams, are urged to exercise extreme caution. This watch may be upgraded to a warning if conditions worsen.
Additionally, a high wind advisory and a small-craft advisory both remain in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday.
Sustained winds of 23 to 29 miles per hour and hazardous, rough seas with swells of 8 to 10 feet are affecting coastal areas, particularly along the northern and eastern coastlines.
Small-craft operators are strongly advised to secure all vessels and fishing gear. Only heavy-duty vessels capable of withstanding rough seas should venture out. Sea-bathers are strictly advised to remain out of the water.
NEMO advises the public to prepare immediately by taking the following actions:
• Review and activate your family emergency and business continuity plans.
• Prepare to evacuate at short notice if you live in high-risk flood-prone or landslide zones.
• Secure loose outdoor objects, clear household drains, and trim overhanging tree branches.
• Ensure you have at least a three-day supply of fresh water and non-perishable food.
NEMO and the Meteorological Services will continue to monitor the system and provide official updates, the release said.
