The inaugural Jiggy Saturday, hosted by Senator Cheiftain Neptune, brought young people from across several communities together for an exciting day of football, cricket and community celebration at the Gorse Playing Field.
Although the event got off to a late start due to heavy rainfall early in the day, the weather did little to dampen the enthusiasm of residents and participants.
As soon as the sun emerged, people began arriving at the playing field in large numbers, eager to support the games and enjoy the day’s activities.
Young people representing Park Hill, Georgetown, Byera, Colonaire, Chester Cottage, Gorse and Owia participated in both the cricket and football competitions, showcasing their talent, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day.
A major highlight of the event was the first-ever Jiggy Saturday 5-A-Side Football Competition, with Shotta Corner claiming the championship title.
In the cricket competition, Owia Strikers emerged victorious to become the inaugural cricket champions.
For many residents of Gorse, the event carried special significance as it brought organised cricket and football back to the Gorse Playing Field after many years without competitive games being played there.
Spectators expressed their delight at once again seeing the field filled with young athletes, supporters and the vibrant energy of community sport.
As evening approached, the celebrations continued with music, entertainment and fellowship, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display that provided a fitting finale to a memorable first edition of Jiggy Saturday.
Neptune expressed appreciation to all the teams, organisers, volunteers, residents and supporters who contributed to making the inaugural Jiggy Saturday a success.
He noted that partnerships with the private sector are important in creating opportunities for young people and supporting positive community initiatives.
Neptune also announced that Jiggy Saturday will become an annual event, while encouraging residents to look forward to many more sporting, recreational and community activities being organised by his team in the upcoming months.
“The success of the inaugural Jiggy Saturday signals a renewed commitment to bringing communities together through sport, recreation and positive community engagement while breathing new life into the historic Gorse Playing Field,” a press release said.
