KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is once against accusing the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) of plotting with foreign elements to remove him from office.
“… Rather than seeking to address matters concerning investment in a way that is good for this country, what do we get from the opposition?” he said at a media briefing last week.
Gonsalves, who is also Minister of National Security, said “a Texan gentleman from Bequia” who had orchestrated the US$5 to save democracy campaign on behalf of the opposition NDP visited the party’s headquarters two weeks ago.
He said Opposition Leader and NDP President Arnhim Eustace and Sen. Vynnette Frederick were at the meeting.
“Ask if that wasn’t true. … You must find that out. Seeking to get money and the fellas promised that when he gets back to Texas he will see if he can get some friends to put money in to help to remove this government and elect the NDP.
“Why doesn’t he bring some millions to invest? Why is he interested to remove the government and put the NDP in power? Reasonable people will ask the questions ‘What is in it for you, Mr. Texan? You want to come like a jefe in this country without investing?’ I am not talking about investing in NDP you know.
“And democracy is so thriving, you can come and go as go want in this country. You have your house in Bequia. I have no problem with that. Come in an enjoy yourself; enjoy Bequia. I am not worried about that because I defeated you and the NDP in 2010 and I will defeat you again in 2015.
“But the people will know that while we are trying to build up this country, they having him coming up to the NDP headquarters looking for money,” Gonsalves said.
Since coming to office in 2001, Gonsalves has said on several occasions that the opposition was partnering with foreign elements to try to unseat him.
He has often said that these foreign elements, which he never identified by name, have a vested interest in having the NDP in office.
Gonsalves has previously written to the CARICOM about the alleged efforts of these elements to unseat his democratically elected government.

Shearer FEARED the PAN AFRICAN MOVEMENT that was taking place in Jamaica, with Walter Rodney at its forefront.
Shearer’s party and his government were EXTREMELY REPRESSIVE towards POOR BLACKS and the RASTAFARIAN MOVEMENT.
Shearer was afraid that Walter Rodney support for the POOR and DISPOSSESSED BLACK BROTHAS and SISTAS in Jamaica, especially those in Kingston, would caused problems for his government.
This led to the PROTEST MARCH by close to NINE HUNDRED STUDENTS, led by the PRESIDENT of the STUDENT GUILD at the MONA CAMPUS, UWI, Ralph Gonsalves.
They marched all the way to SHEARER’S RESIDENT and was met there by POLICE who used TEAR GAS to disburse the crowd. The students under their LEADER, Ralph Gonsalves, went to the HOUSE of PARLIAMENT with their PROTEST and were abused by the police. This was when the POOR PEOPLE in KINGSTON JOINED the PROTEST and a RIOT started which lasted for several days.
Here are excerpts from the Guyana STABROEK NEWSPAPER on the PROTEST/RIOT.
“In any event, it was clear that Rodneys groundings were carefully monitored by the authorities. Inevitably, official suspicion and surveillance and Rodneys solidarity activism could not reconcile. Matters were coming to a head. Rodney left Jamaica to attend the Black Writers Conference in Montreal, Canada. The Hugh Shearer regime, presented with an opportunity, instituted a ban on the historian. The aircraft bringing Rodney from Canada landed at 2.20 pm on Tuesday, October 15, 1968. He was informed on the plane that he could not enter the country. His ban came as a huge shock to the academic community, the Rastafarians and friends, supporters and the working people all over Jamaica and the Caribbean. There are conflicting reports at what time his closest constituents, the students at UWI were aware that Rodney was banned from entering. One source said that some students knew of the ban and were preparing protest action. On the other hand Ralph Gonsalves (now Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines) then a student organizer, seemed to suggest the students were in the dark. In his account he affirmed: it was not until after 9 pm that the students learned he was refused entry and confined to the aircraft. Gonsalves, Rodneys wife Pat, Professor Norman Girvan and others were part of the demonstrations and spoke at rallies in protest against the ban.
Kingston responds
The next day (October 17) found Kingston in upsurge. Large numbers of university students marched from the UWI campus to the city a distance of some six miles. Their intended destination was the Jamaican parliament. By the time the university students arrived in the city their numbers had had been advanced by the entry of high school students, among them current University of Guyana senior lecturer Al Creighton. In the city, masses of people, including areas where Rodney was popular joined the demonstration in droves. By evening, the students and other Jamaicans began to drift away from parliament in batches and small groups. It was at this time that the violence assumed riot proportions. At a main street in the capital called Crossroads, batches of protesters began stoning motor cars, and buildings were also targeted. Cars began turning back and some rioters seized the opportunity to loot stores.
News accounts vary on the damage inflicted on the capital. The Gleaner of October 18 reported thirteen buses destroyed, seventy-two damaged, and ninety buildings either totally or partially damaged. Buses appeared to be identified for special treatment on account of the preceding fury of Kingston residents with the rise in bus fares and peoples anger with the transportation system.
The demonstrations were violently suppressed by the Jamaican security forces. The deaths of two persons were reported and eleven policemen were injured while twenty-three protestors were arrested on various charges. Many demonstrators including students and groups of Rastafarians were beaten.
The banning of Rodney had unleashed a reaction that shook the Shearer regime to its foundation. At first, despite calls to explain why Rodney was banned, the government blustered and refused to give an explanation. But as the protests mounted, Prime Minister Shearer was forced to go to parliament and give a statement. He played to nationalist sentiment in his speech and attempted to establish that foreign students inspired the demonstrations. He also sought to classify Rodney as a communist and terrorist out to subvert the society and overthrow the government. The Minister of Home Affairs was quite blunt and made the famous contention:
In my term of office, and in reading the records of problems in this country, I never come across a man who offers a greater threat to the security of this nation than does Walter Rodney.
A declassified US Department of State telegram said the trouble seemed to be a spontaneous outburst of poor dark Jamaicans as a result of a long period of frustrating strikes and impotence
This was no surprise. Kingston, Rodney had said in his letter to Rohlehr, is meaner than when you left it, and when you left it you did not know how mean it was.

Walter Rodney was a piece of Marxist crap, reinvented by the Marxists since he blew himself up whilst knowingly carrying a home made bomb on his lap in a car.

The students were protesting the banning of Walter Rodney, they were insisting he got his job back at the University. Nothing more and nothing less than that.

Rodney was employed by the University as a lecturer, he had no right to be creeping around and trying to overthrow the Jamaican government by ill means. As for the Rastafari, they were also being used by Walter Rodney as part of a social experiment that went badly wrong.
In Grenada they were used by Maurice Bishop, then discarded and imprisoned.
The Rastafari in SVG have been promised all sorts of things early on in the GONSALVES regime rule, none of which has benefited them or come to realization.
The SVG Rastas even went to Grenada to assist with the revolution, I wonder who convinced them to do that? They even tried to overthrow the SVG government at Union Island, then ran to Grenada, I wonder who convinced them to do that?

January 1968, Jamaica: Rodney returned to Jamaica. With a strange mixture of Castro style communism and Black Power he wasted no time in interesting himself in Jamaican politics.

In 1968: Walter took up his first teaching appointment in Tanzania before returning to his alma mater, the University of the West Indies.
This was a period of great political activity in the Caribbean as the countries begun their post colonial journey. But it was the Black Power Movement that caught Walters imagination.
February 14th 1968, Jamaica: Rodney organised a meeting of six reactionary fellows . All at the meeting had adverse security records Rodney sought their advice on what like minded organisations he could contact. Two organisations were suggested to him, the opposition Peoples National Party [PNP] and the New World Group [NWG]. The latter operated throughout the Anglophone Caribbean. Rodney was not pleased with the counsel of the reactionary fellows. Rodney was unimpressed by the PNP, although he had been a sympathiser of its Young Socialist League equally he was unimpressed with the NWG.
Rodney believed the PNP would have nothing to do with him, and the NWG were too academic and out of touch with the people.
Rodney said he wished to meet the working class people and bypass the existing political parties. He expressed interest in the Rastafarians.

Walter Rodney was by now a well known political activist, he took his message of Black Liberation to the stunted areas of Jamaica. In particular he shared his knowledge of African history with one of the most rejected section of the Jamaican society-the Rastafarians.
Rodneys encounters with the Rastafarians were published in a pamphlet entitled Grounding with My Brothers, that became a bible for the Caribbean Black Power Movement.
Rodney was a popular teacher and community speaker giving lectures and speeches on African history and Black power at student forums and to economically depressed people in Kingston and in the countryside.
May 1968, Jamaica: The Jamaican government were growing increasingly angry over Walter Rodneys political work and described him as a “threat to national security”. The Minister of Home Affairs was very blunt and direct on the nature of the ‘threat’ posed by Rodney: “In my term of office, and in reading the records of problems in this country. I have never come across a man who offers a greater threat to the security of this land than does Walter Rodney.”
The ‘threat’ posed by Rodney is well documented in declassified documents on Jamaican security reports on Rodney’s early activity in Jamaica, one section of an Internal Security Review held that the Jamaican special Branch “received information that Rodney had been in touch with the Rastafarians in the Montego Bay area and was trying to incite them to attack the tourists in December which is the beginning of the peak of the tourist season.”
Summer 1968: Rodneys groundings with the working poor of Jamaica had begun to attract the attention of the government. So, when he attended a Black Writers Conference in Montreal, Canada, in October 1968, the Hugh Shearer-led Jamaican Labor Party Government banned him from re-entering the country. This action sparked widespread riots and revolts in Kingston in which several people were killed and injured by the police and security forces, and millions of dollars worth of property destroyed.
October 14th 1968: The Jamaican parliamentary cabinet with the UWI Chancellor in attendance met and subsequently declared Rodney persona non grata.
The decision was remarkably unhurried, the information on which the cabinet acted had been available for about two weeks, perhaps longer. The allegation, was reputed to be of the utmost seriousness. Never in the history of modern Jamaica, the misnamed minister of legal affairs would later inform, has there been a man who provided greater threat to the security of Jamaica than Rodney.
The action against Rodney would turn out to be even more inflammatory. The authorities having discovered his whereabouts, he returned to Jamaica on October 15, the day after the cabinet made their ruling of persona non grata.

October 15th 1968: The government of Jamaica barred Walter Rodney from returning to the island. A lecturer at the Jamaica (Mona) campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Rodney had been out of the country in Canada.
Rodney was returning to Jamaica from Montreal, Canada, where he had been attending a Black Writers Conference when the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) government of Prime Minister Hugh Shearer blocked his re-entry to the country.
The decision to ban him sparked major disturbances, culminating in a rising in the capital city of Kingston.
October 16th 1968, Jamaica: President of the Guild of Undergraduates at Mona University Jamaica, Vincentian Ralph E. Gonsalves leader of several students of political science and self professed Marxist-Leninist communist, led the student protest at the banning of Marxist-Leninist communist, activist, historian, intellectual Walter Rodney.
Road blocks were set. The protest turned into a violent mob ruled riot and upwards of 20 million US dollars worth of property was damaged and destroyed, with buss and other vehicles being burnt. One of the targets was the American Embassy which was partially destroyed, to chants from the rioters of go home American Imperialists. Shop windows and property destroyed and looted, and six died. When it started to turn really wild and out of control, Ralph Gonsalves and his comrades lit out and hid back at the University, claiming they took no part in the riots.
The Jamaica Labour Party government led by Hugh Shearer said at the time. One was allowed to be as revolutionary as one fancied within the Ivory Tower on the University campus at Mona (already ceded as foreign territory) but bringing such dangerous academic activity out into the local communities by the likes of Rodney, Clive Y. Thomas, Arnold Bertram, Rupert Lewis, Ralph Gonsalves and later Trevor Munroe were doing was not to be tolerated.
Prime Minister of Jamaica Hugh Shearer, addressing the Jamaican Parliament, quoted from a confidential Security Report. Sir Hugh Shearer, speaking of the Jamaican government decision to expel Walter Rodney, said:
“He (Rodney) lost little time in engaging in subversive activities on his return (to Jamaica). He quickly announced his intention of organising revolutionary groups for what he termed ‘the struggle ahead’ and then closely associated himself with groups of people who claimed to be part of the Rastafarian Movement and also with Claudius Henry, who was convicted in 1960 of Treason Felony as a result of activities which required the use of armed forces.
“He openly declared his belief that as Jamaica was predominantly a black country, all brown-skinned mulatto people and their assets should be destroyed. He consistently told the groups with whom he associated that this could be achieved by revolution and that no revolution had ever taken place without armed struggle and bloodshed. This resort to violence was the recurrent theme of all his discussions with these groups as was his condemnation of the democratic system of government in Jamaica.
“In recent months, Rodney stepped up the pace of his activities and was actively engaged in organising groups of semi-literates and unemployed for avowed revolutionary purposes. He constantly reiterated the necessity for the use of violence in attaining his ends; the procurement of firearms and training in their use was recently a major topic of discussion. Furthermore, at one meeting at the UWI campus at Mona, Rodney reportedly said, ‘Revolution must come. We must be prepared to see it through. We must stop talking and indulging in academic exercises and act. Who will be the first to come with me downtown and take up a machine gun?’
“In terms of tactics one of the things University students were urged by way of pamphlet to do was to: ‘Provoke the police, don’t argue with them; ridicule them; goad them; let them attack you’.”
Shearer concluded that:
“The whole pattern of the destructive campaign shows evidence of careful planning beyond the capacity of hoodlums or the usual subversive groups with which the government has had to deal in the past. No wonder a Rastafarian at one of Rodney’s campus meetings publicly declared – ‘We have the brawn, you have the brains; all we need are the guns’.”
[Authors Remarks: Walter Rodney was a rank communist, with Soviet and Cuban indoctrination. He attempted to convert the Black population of Jamaica to communism by hijacking the Black Power Movement. The events of October 1968, the actual protest and its immediate aftermath, transformed Gonsalves from a narrow student activist [activism n. 1. a policy of taking direct and militant action to achieve a political or social goal. WordNet 1.5] albeit with external political linkages into a focused political activist, first in Jamaica, and then in the Caribbean, including his homeland, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The entire Rodney Affair, including the reaction by the Jamaican government and the right wing, summoned from Gonsalves an extreme left wing commitment, Gonsalves role and function altered, but always centred on the core left wing commitment. Because of his actions, the beatings, tear-gassing, security surveillance, and diverse pressures that he received or endured at the hands of the Jamaican security forces helped to make him grow up politically. He wore such adversities as badges of political honour, and bragged and was admired by other extreme left wing activists.
The day Walter Rodney was banned, the UWI campus erupted; angry students quickly arranged for buses and trucks to take them to the offices of the prime minister and the ministry of home affairs to protest the following day. The vehicles failed to appear, and the students blamed the heavy hand of officialdom. Undaunted, the protestors took to their heels, only to be met by police officers wielding batons and firing teargas. The larger procession dispersed, the determined students made their way in small groups to the ministry of home affairs, where a delegation met the permanent secretary. The protestors were herded into a schoolyard across the street, where several individuals held forth.

Several people were killed, numerous injured and millions of dollars in property was destroyed. This period of rebellion is captured in Joey Tyson, a childrens novel by Andrew Salkey published in 1974.
Across the street conspicuous speaker, perhaps, was Rodneys pregnant wife, Patricia Rodney, whose placard pointedly asked, Where is my husband?
