The SVG Rugby Union earlier this month celebrated the end of their first week of their new grass roots programme, Get Into Rugby, with a kiddies rugby fun day.

More than 60 children from eight schools took to the Arnos Vale Playing Field to attend a day of rugby and fun, which saw the SVG National Senior Males, Senior Females and the Under 19’s teams introducing tag rugby (non contact) to Grades 3 and 4.

Since the programme began on January 27, the sport of rugby has been introduced to over 300 children who have enjoyed the training and coaching with the Union.

Youth Development Officer, Valarie Pelletier, said: “This has been an excellent start to the programme and we are excited for the following weeks to slowly introduce the concept of tag rugby to the children. I can’t wait to see them play a friendly competition at the end of the programme and for us to recruit new schools in September.”

The programme will continue in all eight participating schools until May 31, when the Union will host a grand finale inter school tag competition open to all schools on the programme.

Much like the fun day, it will be a great chance for persons interested in learning more about rugby to attend, the association said.
