Prime Minister, Ralph Gonsalves, on Sunday, urged public sector workers not to strike on Tuesday, saying it will spoil the Men’s National Football team, Vincy Heat’s, football World Cup qualifier against the United States.

Only that Gonsalves got the date of the match wrong.

“On the 13th, Tuesday, we play America in Missouri. I want to tell the teachers don’t spoil that day with a strike. Don’t spoil it. You hear me? That should be a day of joy. You hear me? Don’t spoil it,” Gonsalves told supporters of his Unity Labour Party at a rally in Vermont.

Vincy Heat will actually play the USA on Nov. 13, one month later than Gonsalves said.

The Teachers Union and the Public Service Union have announced a one-day strike to force the government to pay public sector workers one month’s salary tax-free in lieu of salary increases since 2011.

  1. This gov’t don’t care about and would love to see the back of football in this country, Just over 10 yrs ago Vincy Heat had a friendly at Arnos Vale where you would expect gov’t officials in attendance. This ULP instead choose to have a political rally at the same time a few hundred metres away, at Sion Hill playing field, with the intent to draw support away our national team.
